Description

The Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33) is a very appreciated object because of its shape remind us of a horse's head.

It is about 1,500 light-years away and is part of the Orion Cloud, a large gas and dust structure where star formation occurs and encompasses several nebulae such as the Orion Nebula (M42), M43, M78, and others.

The characteristic red coloration of the Horse's Head is due to the large amount of hydrogen ionized by the star Sigma Orionis (bright star appearing west of the Nebula), which predominates behind a thick cloud of dark dust that forms the horse's head itself.
